FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Arlington, Va., September 25, 2003: The Fiber Optics LAN Section (FOLS) of the Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) launched a new web site today at www.fols.org. The web site is designed to serve as a resource to network planners and others seeking information about the benefits of using optical fiber in LANs and applications such as Storage Area Networks, Data Centers, Industrial Applications, Central Offices, Building Security Systems, and Fiber in the Home. The FOLS web site features information about optical fiber technology, a host of application profiles, information on fiber-related standards, answers to frequently asked questions about the use of fiber in customer-owned networks, and our exclusive interactive cost models.
"Many end users considering optical fiber for their network have questions about fiber optic technology, or how fiber is used in their application. We developed the web site to provide quick and easy access to this type of information," said John Struhar, FOLS Chairman. "Many potential users may not be that familiar with the benefits of optical fiber - or may be influenced by the myths that perpetuate about fiber - and we believe that the FOLS can provide the information they need to make an educated decision about their cabling infrastructure."
Struhar reports that high-speed networks, graphic-intensive applications and Internet use have all increased the amount of bandwidth needed for reliable and easily upgradeable cabling infrastructure. "As network managers plan to upgrade their systems, or install new networks, we want to provide information that will help them feel comfortable with choosing to deploy cost-effective multimode optical fiber systems throughout their network," he said.
For more information on the Fiber Optics LAN Section and to learn how to join, please contact Sharon Grace at TIA at sgrace@tiaonline.org or (703) 907-7721, or download an application from our web site at http://www.fols.org.
The FOLS focuses on educating end users and influencers about the technical advantages and affordability that optical transmission brings to customer-owned networks. Member companies of the FOLS include 3M/Volition, ADC, AMP/Tyco Electronics, CommScope, Corning, Fluke Networks, Leviton Voice & Data, OFS, Optek Technology, Ortronics, Panduit, Pearson Technologies, and Sumitomo Electric Lightwave. Hierarchical Star, Centralized Cabling or Fiber-to-the-Telecom Enclosure -- which architecture is best for your installation?
Find out with the FOLS Cost Model.
This interactive cost model is a tool that helps you compare the installed first costs of several standards-compliant architectures using fiber and copper cabling. The Cost Model lets you input your own data to most accurately allow you to compare different media choices.
