FOA Publishes New Textbook On Premises Cabling

The FOA has published a new textbook, the FOA Reference Guide to Premises Cabling. This textbook is designed for as a reference book on premises cabling, to be used as a textbook for training premises cabling technicians or as a guide for studying for FOA CPCT certification. This textbook was developed from new material on the FOA Online Reference Guide website (www.foaguide.org) and is complemented by hundreds of web pages on relevant topics. The book is available from online booksellers like the FOA eStore or Amazon.com for only $19.95 and soon electronically on on the Kindle and iPad.

As every installer knows, premises cabling is no longer just "Cat 5 for LANs," but is an integrated system utilizing copper, fiber and wireless connectivity to support LANs, phones, security systems, building management systems, video and more. Today, it's important that every tech knows as much as possible about copper, fiber and wireless technology so they can deal successfully with all three in premises cabling systems. This book includes some topics not generally covered in cabling books, like coax and wireless because of their importance in today's world.

The FOA has always tried to provide the world with sources of technically correct, unbiased information on fiber optics and premises cabling using both print and electronic media. With the FOA's 15 years experience in certifying almost 30,000 fiber optic and premises cabling techs through over 250 FOA-Approved traning organizations, we have organized the materials in this new book to make it better arranged for training and learning. We have also added new materials on premises cabling network design and installation as requested by students, instructors and FOA members. A new curriculum for the FOA CPCT certification is available to training organizations also.

The FOA Online Reference Guide to Premises Cabling (www.foaguide.org) on the FOA website (www.thefoa.org) is probably the largest and most used reference site about fiber optics on the Internet. For those who prefer reading printed material, we offer this new book, a basic reference for premises cabling and a study guide for FOA certifications. Supplementary materials with even more depth on many subjects, are, of course, on the FOA Reference Guide website.

The FOA Reference Guide to Premises Cabling will be used as the new reference guide for training students for the FOA Certified Premises Cabling Technician (CPCT) certification in 2010.

Tech Tidbit
Textbooks have become incredibly expensive in the last few years. With the new FOA Reference Guide to Premises Cabling, the FOA is using the latest technology in publishing, called "publishing on demand." Rather than print and inventory hundreds or thousands of books, the book is kept as electronic files and printed only when ordered. A book can be printed in minutes when needed at a fraction of the cost of printing, warehousing and distributing conventional publications. Using this technology and distributing the book through online booksellers like eStore and Amazon.com keeps the cost of the book a very reasonable $19.95. The price will be even lower when available electronically for the Kindle and iPad.
