October 15, 2001 -- Arlington, Va. - The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) has announced a generous donation of network infrastructure equipment made by its members. The donated equipment was used to facilitate an expansion of the Association's communications infrastructure to a fiber-based Fast Ethernet network.
The network upgrade was driven by TIA's desires to better serve its membership and manage organizational changes and additions. To support this initiative, TIA sought the help of its members -- including some from the Fiber Optics LAN Section (FOLS) -- to increase its network operating capacity from 10 Megabits per second (Mbps) to 100 Mbps over 62.5-micron cable. Companies donating equipment to the TIA for this effort include: Leviton Voice & Data Division, General Cable, Corning Cable Systems, Lucent Technologies and 3M - Telecom Systems Division. Consequently, thousands of dollars of components were supplied to build out the network infrastructure in a move that will save valuable time and expense in the future as TIA continues to develop its member services.
Among the connectivity components donated for the upgrade:
- Multimode Duplex Patchcords
- Multimedia Boxes
- QuickPort Snap-in Connectors
- Shelves
- Blank Panels
- Multimedia Wallplates
- UniCam SC Multimode Connectors
- 6-strand Multimode Metal-clad Optical Fiber Cable with 62.5 micron Multimode fiber
"We are grateful for the generosity of our member companies, which continue to demonstrate their leadership in the communications infrastructure sphere," said TIA President Matthew J. Flanigan. "Their commitment to supporting the association enables us to lead the continued technical evolution of TIA into a true 'e-association,' as we are committed to serving our members in new and leading-edge ways."
With fiber technology running to every employee's desktop, TIA will avoid further costly network equipment purchases and periodic upgrades, as the built-in capabilities of fiber will be able to handle future growth of the association. In addition, members will reap the benefits, as Web and email connections will prove to be much faster than the old network, which ran at 10 Mbps. TIA also will be able support high bandwidth applications and handle the high demand for file transfer protocol (FTP) services.
"Ensuring quick access to information on the network has always been a focus of the TIA MIS Department," said Bisrat Bainesagn, network engineer at TIA. "With the inclusion of fiber into the entire TIA network, our connection speeds have been upgraded significantly -- staff desktops operate at 100 Mbps -- and members will see a marked improvement in the speed of accessing member services."
While TIA gets the equipment it needs to function more effectively, its members were pleased to have the opportunity to showcase the interoperability of their products and to demonstrate the benefits that an all-fiber LAN offers users - namely, the ability to support higher bandwidth applications, increase the responsiveness of the network and offer future proofing to support future upgrades.
"Members of the FOLS are pleased to have been involved in this upgrade and honored to donate our fiber optic hardware and equipment to support the TIA member services' objectives," said Bob Pollock, director of private networks sales and marketing, Corning Cable Systems and chair of the FOLS, which helped coordinate the donation campaign.
