June 25, 2001 -- Bob Pollock of Corning Cable Systems has been named chair of the Fiber Optics LAN Section of the Telecommunications Industry Association in 2001. Now starting its eighth year, the Fiber Optics LAN Section is dedicated to educating users about the benefits that glass optical fiber can bring to the horizontal cabling portion of Local Area Networks. The FOLS serves as a resource for users who would like to learn more about the benefits and application of this medium, providing technical information, resource directories, case histories and information on evolving standards. Information on the FOLS, along with technical, application and standards information can be found on our web site at www.fols.org.
Leading the organization in 2001 are the following officers.
Section Chair: Bob Pollock, Corning Cable Systems
Section Vice Chair: Robert Lopes, MicroLinear
Chair, Communications Subcommittee: Louise Bryant, Lucent Technologies
Chair, Membership Committee: John Struhar, Lucent Technologies
Chair, Standards Subcommittee: Herb Congdon, AMP/Tyco Electronics
"The Fiber Optics LAN Section offers companies involved in fiber components for LANs a venue where we can work together on programs that benefit the industry," said Bob Pollock, Director of Marketing at Corning Cable Systems, and one of the charter members of FOLS. "It's a place where companies set aside competition and work in concert for a common cause."
That cause essentially is to debunk some of the misconceptions that exist about using fiber in the horizontal cabling portions of LANs. "Let's face it," said Pollock. "Copper has been used in the horizontal for a long time and network managers need compelling reasons to switch to fiber. Our mission is to show them that those reasons - high bandwidth requirements, network scalability, reliability and cost efficiency - are here today."
In May, the FOLS celebrated the successful conclusion of an initiative started by the Section in 1998 - the ratification of ANSI/TIA/EIA-785, which supports Fast Ethernet over 850 nm electronics. "100BASE-SX gives users a cost-effective, simple migration path to 100 Mbps Ethernet using LED electronics," explained Pollock. "Our members listened to the needs of their clients and worked together to initiate the standard and support the development work."
To help network planners and end users in their decisions concerning transmission media, the FOLS regularly publishes information about glass optical fiber and its increasing use in the horizontal cabling portion of the LAN. Recent documents include a white paper, a directory of market research reports, a Fiber-to-the-Desk Suppliers Guide, profiles of end users, and a brochure that explains the benefits of deploying fiber in the horizontal.
